Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) Faculty Travel Award

The UU Center for Latin American Studies is pleased to announce a competition for Faculty Travel Awards to support travel to Latin America and the Caribbean. Thanks to funds from our Title VI NRC grant, CLAS can provide a limited number of grants to full-time faculty members, including lecturers, to support field research and other activities that enhance program and professional development. The primary objective of these grants is to give UU faculty members opportunities to begin fieldwork on new projects or to complete, supplement, or add a comparative dimension to previously conducted field research.

Smaller grants are also available for activities that support the growth of Latin American studies at the UU. These activities can include travel that enhances Latin American content in the university’s curriculum, develops or strengthens university partnerships and exchanges in Latin America, develops collaborative relationships with Latin American scholars and artists, or develops new opportunities for UU students to study and learn about Latin America. Awards are intended to support broader program development and should not focus exclusively on conference presentations but incorporate additional elements with a broader impact on university and research linkages.

International travel awards range from $500-$1500 and can be used for airfare and related travel costs. International travel expenses need to be approved by the US Department of Education, which can take up to 30 days, so please do not book your travel until after the award notification.

We understand that faculty are confronting a range of travel restrictions from the University as well as other national and international entities, and we join these entities in prioritizing faculty health and wellbeing. As a result, we recognize that, depending on how this situation evolves, planned field research in 2020 may need to be postponed. In response to these unprecedented circumstances, CLAS will allow all 2020 recipients of Faculty Travel Awards to use awarded funds any time before August 14, 2021.

All participants in University-related International Travel are strongly encouraged to inform themselves fully about the travel risks involved with travel to their foreign destination(s). In particular, before making travel arrangements, travelers should review the information available on the U.S. Department of State and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention websites for updated information regarding Travel Warnings and Travel Health Notices.

Please note that recipients must contact CLAS before making any flight reservations and at least 45 days prior to their departure date to request the release of their funds and to ensure all flights are Fly America Compliant. In addition, according to university policy (University Rule R3-030D https://regulations.utah.edu/administration/rules/R3-030D.php) all international travel must be registered and approved by the university at least three weeks prior to the departure date.  All funds will be released by CLAS in accordance with University and other travel restrictions. The University reserves the right to prohibit or suspend travel if (1) health, safety, or security concerns pose unacceptable risks; (2) travelers have violated laws, regulation, or University policy (including the Student Code of Conduct); or (3) there is other good cause. If the U.S. Department of State issues a Level 03 or Level 04 Travel Advisory or the CDC issues a Level 3 Travel Health Notice for a given country or region, the University may require a University member currently traveling in such to depart that location or to request approval to remain in that location. CLAS will provide additional information with faculty regarding acceptance, updating travel itineraries, travel registration, and other related information. Thank you for your continued patience as we work through these unprecedented challenges. If you have any additional questions please reach out to Kari Moore at CLAS@utah.edu.
