About the Center

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS), a Title VI National Resource Center, serves as a hub for Latin American-related activities at the University of Utah involving teaching, research and community outreach. On campus, CLAS partners with the Office of Global Engagement, Hinckley Institute of Politics, Department of World Languages & Cultures, and Second Language Teaching and Research Center, in addition to many individual departments and colleges, to facilitate the development of Latin America-related curriculum, public events, conferences, study abroad and internship programs.

CLAS also partners with a network of post-secondary institutions and community organizations in the state, including Brigham Young University, Salt Lake Community College, Utah Valley University, the Utah State Office of Education, Westside Pathways and Artes de México en Utah to promote education and research on Latin America, to support the nationally recognized Utah K-12 dual language immersion program in Spanish and Portuguese, and to recruit underrepresented groups to international education and language learning.

With over 76 faculty members across 31 departments and 13 colleges, including many who pursue interdisciplinary, comparative, and transnational approaches to Latin America, CLAS boasts strengths in Mexico, Brazil, tropical biology, Indigenous Studies and the Latino diaspora.
