Major and Minor Requirements for Latin American Studies

In order to declare a major or minor in Latin American Studies, students are required to meet with an advisor. Latin American Studies is an open major, meaning that you don't have to apply or take any prerequisites to declare.

Major Overview

Latin American Studies Major

Major Requirements: 52 Credits

  • Introductory Courses: choose any two (6 credits)
    • HIST 1300: Latin American Civ to the 1820s
    • HIST 1310: Latin American Civ since the 1820s
    • ANTH 3140: Peoples & Cultures of Latin America 
  • Lower Division Language Requirement (16 credits)
    • Complete 16 credits of a Latin American language (Nahuatl, Portuguese, Spanish, or Quechua)
      • LANG 1010
      • LANG 1020
      • LANG 2010
      • LANG 2020
  • IAS Core Curriculum (3 credits)
    • LAS 3000 Foundations for Latin American Studies
  • Focus Electives  (15 credits)
    • Complete 15 credits of upper-division Latin American Studies courses
  • Upper Division Language or Allied Electives (6 credits)
    • For students studying Nahuatl, Portuguese, and Spanish—take 6 credits of NAHTL, PTGSE, or SPAN 3000-5999
      • Not from PTGSE 3940, PTGSE 4710, or SPAN 3940
    • For students studying Quechua, choose 6 credits of upper-division allied coursework outside of Latin American Studies
      • Courses must be pre-approved by an IAS advisor
  • Latin American Studies Focus Electives (15 credits)
  • IAS Core Curriculum: Capstone (3 credits)
    • LAS 5000 Capstone for Latin American Studies
  • Signature Experience  (3 credits)
    • Complete 3 credits by participating in a study abroad, internship, independent study/research course, or community-engaged-learning course.  The selection must be pre-approved by an IAS advisor.

 

Notes: No more than 3 credits from a Hinckley internship may count toward your major and no more than 3 courses from the same department may count toward your focus electives.

Grade Requirements: All major courses must be taken for a minimum letter grade of C or better.

Minor Overview

Latin American Studies Minor

Minor Requirements: 18 Credits

  • Core Courses (6 credit hours)
    • HIST 1300 or HIST 1310
    • SPAN or PTGSE 3000+ level course or NAHTL or QUECH 2020
  • Electives (12 credit hours)*
    • Four upper-division courses from the approved elective list.

Notes: No more than 3 credits from a Hinckley internship may count toward your major and no more than 3 courses from the same department may count toward your major.
