Dr. Shane Macfarlan (Anthropology, Center for Latin American Studies) was selected for the Fulbright US Scholar award for Mexico for AY 2026-2027 (also referred to as Fulbright-Garcia Robles). He'll be performing research and teaching at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS), located in the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico. His teaching will focus on Ethnographic Methods and Peninsular Culture History. His research will focus on Rural Livelihoods, Traditional Ranchero Culture, Land Abandonment, and Urban Migration (building off the work being performed by Abby Swanson). This opportunity was made possible, in part, by the years of funding CLAS has provided to Shane and his students, which allowed him to develop meaningful collaborations with in-country partner institutions.
