Alejo Stark
Department: World Languages and Cultures
Alejo Stark (he/him) recently earned his Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures (RLL) at the University of Michigan. His research crosses disciplinary borders between science, art, and politics. Alejo grew up in ArgentinAlea and migrated to the United States with his parents. As a first-generation immigrant student transferring from Miami Dade Community College, he graduated with an ScB in Physics and a BA in Africana Studies from Brown University. He pursued a similarly expansive program of study at the University of Michigan, where he also earned a Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics and an M.A. in Philosophy. In his Ph.D. work in RLL, he combined his interests in the history and philosophy of science and how these fields shape and are shaped by current debates within Indigenous and Latin American Studies. His future book project, Theory of the Encounter of Practices: Science, Art and Politics in Latin America, reconfigures disciplinary borders and research programs by reexamining canonical cases in Perú and México. He is finishing a translated anthology titled The Zapatista ConCiencias: For a Science from Below and to the Left on the two Zapatista encuentros with scientists in Chiapas, México, in which he participated as an astrophysicist.
Keri González
Department: World Languages and Cultures
I earned my BA in Hispanic American Literature and completed my MA in Latin American Literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In 2011, I moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, and received my Ph.D. from the University of Utah in 2019. My research interests encompass Mexican Literature and Cinema, U.S.-Mexican Border Studies, Mexican Transnational Literature and Cinema, Transborder Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, and ChicanX and LatinX Studies. I have taught a variety of Spanish American and Mexican literature and culture courses in both Mexico and the United States, covering literary texts from the Pre-Colonial through the contemporary period, including the writings of indigenous cultures, the Spanish Chronicles of Conquest, and works related to Latin-American migration in the twenty-first century. Additionally, I have taught various Spanish language classes for both Spanish heritage speakers and second-language learners at the University of Utah. I also served as the Spanish-language Coordinator for the Spanish language Bridge Program, collaborating with Dual Language Immersion administrators and teachers. In this role, I provided pedagogical support to both university and high school instructors, fostering cultural competence and awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity across the Spanish-speaking world, including Hispanic and LatinX communities in the U.S.
Christopher Lewis
Department: World Languages and Cultures
Current research:
Though I am primarily a Brazilianist, I have research and teaching interests that span the lusophone world. I am interested in concepts of time, identity, and genre convergence / transgression in film, popular music, and literature, and have published on both contemporary and canonical works. I am currently working on projects exploring writing after post-modernism and the literary heritage of the War of Canudos and the Utah War.
Opportunities for students:
I have served on graduate committees for students studying a wide variety of subjects relating to Brazil, but projects whose focus revolves around literature, cinema, music, and cultural studies are the best fit for my expertise.
Shane J Macfarlan
Department: Anthropology
Current research:
I am a broadly trained scientific cultural anthropologist with research interests in Latin America and the Caribbean. My research applies methods and theories from cultural anthropology, evolutionary biology, neo-institutional economics, and systems ecology to study cooperation, conflict, and natural resource management in small-scale societies. Over the last 10 years, I have examined how people construct and maintain informal social support networks to buffer against risk (Commonwealth of Dominica), the relationship between warfare and marriage in lowland Amazonia (Venezuela and Ecuador), and indigenous cultural adaptations to desert ecologies (Baja California Sur, Mexico). My current research projects are focused largely on rural populations and desert ecosystems in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Research topics include 1) how traditional ecological knowledge affects spring water management; 2) how social networks impact economic inequality; and 3) the historical demography of the Baja California peninsula during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Opportunities for students:
I am particularly interested in collaborating with students on research projects that focus on the Baja California peninsula; however, I am willing to work with students on a variety of topics, especially those dealing with social networks, natural resource management, desert ecologies, and/or cooperation and conflict.
Daniela Samur
Department: History
Daniela Samur is from Bogotá, Colombia, and a historian of modern Latin America. She completed her PhD in History at Cornell University in 2024 and is an incoming faculty in the Department of History. She has two BAs, in History and Political Science, from Universidad de los Andes, and an MA in Literary Studies from Universidad Nacional. Before moving to the United States to start her doctoral studies, she worked at Colombia’s main public library –Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango– in cultural and outreach projects. Daniela is broadly interested in the relation between culture and power, spatial history and theory, and in ways of connecting history and fiction. In her research, she focuses on everyday state formation, the social relations of production, exchange, and consumption of mundane objects, material culture, space-making,and urban worlds. Her current book project, Binding the State: Bogotá’s World of Prints, is a social history of prints, the materiality of state formation, and the making of urban spaces from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. She is member of CLAH’s (Conference on Latin American History) General Committee, and her work has been published in the Journal of Urban History and Itinerario.
