Students will board with indigenous families in the community. Students will walk daily from the house where they are boarding to the program site in Tecomate (no longer than a ten-minute walk).
Location
The Summer Intensive Nahuatl Language and Culture Program will be held yearly during the last week of June and the month of July in the town of El Tecomate municipality of Chicontepec, state of Veracruz, Mexico (See map below). The nearest major city is Poza Rica, Veracruz, on the Atlantic Seaboard. Students will board with indigenous families in the community, study approximately six hours per weekday (two hours of Older Nahuatl, two hours of Modern Nahuatl, one hour of tutoring, and one hour of extra-curricular activities), and optionally participate in day excursions on weekends. Students will walk daily from the house where they are boarding to the program site in Tecomate (no longer than a ten-minute walk).
About the city of Chicontepec de Tejada:
- The city has a population of approximately 4823.
- It is the seat of the municipality of Chicontepec in the state of Veracruz.
- From El Tecomate, one can travel by taxi to Chicontepec in 30-40 minutes
- There is bank branch of Bancomer
- There is a bus station with connections to Mexico City and Xalapa
- There are various hotels, pharmacies, convenience stores, restaurants, hardware stores
- There is a major hospital "ISSSTE", as well as many private doctors with specializations
Specific information about El Tecomate:
- It has approximately 600 inhabitants
- It has six convenience stores 3. It has a pharmacy
- It has a water distribution system
- It has a business with a water purification system where people can fill their demijohns
- The four most important streets in the community are paved
- It has a stationary store with a copy machine
- It has taxi service (collective or private) to and from the municipality of Chicontepec
- When it rains, the unpaved streets get very muddy
- There is a local governmental authority, the "Agente de communidad"
- In the afternoons, there are varios taco stands
- Thursdays there is a farmer's market, with the participation of local producers
- There is a Catholic Church and a Johova's Witness templo
